FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - A man has been arrested in the assault of a woman stabbed more than 20 times and found along a Fairbanks street.

Fairbanks police say 31-year-old Sultan Sukano Friday was charged Wednesday with felony assault in the stabbing of 31-year-old Betty Ann Matthews.

Matthews remains in critical condition at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

Police on Tuesday night took a 911 call reporting that a woman was lying along a street in south Fairbanks. Responders found Matthews bleeding from stab wounds. She was not conscious.

Police say Friday was in a domestic relationship with Matthews.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. Online court records did not list a defense attorney who could be contacted for comment.
