Seattle Police Assistant Chief Robert Merner says Ma was taken to a hospital following the arrest for treatment of an elbow injury sustained during his struggle with officers.

Police said in a news release that Ma died at the hospital Tuesday.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office says Ma died of a blood clot sustained after an altercation with police. His death has been ruled a homicide.

Police say they are working with the medical examiner to review the details surrounding Ma’s death.
