NEW YORK (AP) - The New York City Council has passed legislation to protect family caregivers from employment discrimination.

The council voted Wednesday to amend the city’s human rights law to make “caregiver status” a protected class.

The legislation benefits family members who care for children, the disabled and the elderly.

It’s designed to ensure fair treatment for caregivers in both the workplace and during the hiring process.
