PHOENIX (AP) - The Phoenix City Council has approved Starbucks’ applications for a license that would allow the sale of beer, wine and liquor.

Council members voted 8-1 Wednesday. However, the vote only provides a recommendation to the state liquor board, which has the final say.

Starbucks wants to serve alcohol at four central Phoenix stores.

The company is looking to expand its “Evenings” concept throughout Arizona to offer craft beer, wine and small food plates in addition to its current menu.

Tempe and Scottsdale already have approved recommendations for liquor licenses for Starbucks.

The Phoenix Police Department opposes the coffee giant’s plan.

Police officials say Starbucks doesn’t meet the requirements of the restaurant license it applied for.
