ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - The Port of Astoria has expressed interest in buying some or all of the undeveloped land on Oregon’s South Tongue Point.

The Daily Astorian reports (https://bit.ly/1TSvnGE ) that the Executive Director Jim Knight says the Port sent a letter to the Oregon Department of State Lands saying the agency is interested in the purchase.

Clatsop Community College has also expressed interest in the land east of Astoria, which was created several decades ago from soil dredged from the Columbia River shipping channel. It is zoned as marine industrial but still mostly undeveloped.

Port Commission member Bill Hunsinger says the Port should aggressively pursue the land, which is essential for establishing a freight railhead.
