TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Cissy Proctor will be new executive director of Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity.

Proctor has been with the department since 2013 and has served as chief of staff since last January. Her appointment is effective Jan. 9.

Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement that Proctor has a strong background in legislative affairs and will be a great partner with the Legislature to diversify the state economy.

Florida Senate President Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, in a statement lauded Proctor’s appointment and for Scott moving swiftly to fill the position with the upcoming Legislature session beginning on Jan. 12.

Protcor replaces Jesse Panuccio, who had been appointed in 2013 but was not confirmed by the Senate last year after Scott re-appointed him when Scott won re-election.
