SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Southaven has appointed new police and fire chiefs to replace the retiring heads of those departments in January.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1QrdfGd) aldermen have named Deputy Police Chief Steve Pirtle to replace Tom Long, and Deputy Fire Chief Roger Thornton was named to replace Ron White.

Long and White both retire Jan. 22, and Pirtle and Thornton will step into the roles the following day.

Mayor Darren Musselwhite praised Pirtle and Thornton for their long service with the city following Tuesday night’s unanimous votes by aldermen accepting the two recommendations. There was no discussion about either appointment.

Long and White oversaw two key city services during a period of dramatic growth for Southaven, which has matured into Mississippi’s fifth-largest city during their watches.
