BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Officials say surgery is expected for a southeastern Iowa sheriff who accidentally shot himself in the left hand while cleaning a gun.

A news release from the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office says Sheriff Mike Johnstone was cleaning his personally-owned handgun at his home when it fired around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnstone was taken to the Great River Medical Center’s emergency room for treatment. His injury is not considered to be life-threatening.

The department’s release says the hospital has made arrangements to have Johnstone transferred to another medical facility where he could be treated by a surgeon who specializes in hand injuries.
