TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Tupelo City Council has approved two bids for the construction of safe rooms in Lee Acres and Theron Nichols Park.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/229OqCx) each monolithic dome structure will be capable of holding more than 1,000 residents and withstand wind speeds of more than 150 mph.

Century Construction of Tupelo was the low bidder for the Lee Acres safe room with a base bid of $1.23 million. CIG Contractors of Corinth will build the Theron Nichols project for a base bid of $1.2 million.

The city plans to negotiate with the contractors to lower the costs of the alternates.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency grants will pay 90 percent of the cost, but the projects have to be finished by March 2017.
