DENVER (AP) - Police say an Aurora officer slipped and accidently shot a car theft suspect during a foot chase, leaving him critically wounded.

The officer, whose name hasn’t been released, was part of a team pursuing a group of alleged car thieves in Commerce City on Thursday night.

After finding a stolen vehicle in a parking lot, one of the suspects fled in another car, then crashed it into a snowbank. He was shot after he ditched the car and ran. Investigators say the officer radioed that he had unintentionally shot the 20-year-old man.

Because the shooting happened in Denver, the Denver Police Department is leading the investigation.

The officer has been placed on paid leave, and Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz has ordered the review of the way the department teaches firearms safety.
