SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A 20-year-old central New York man convicted of murder in the shooting death of another man has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

Ondondaga County Court Judge Thomas Miller called the murder of 19-year-old Marquell Givens “cold, callous, calculated” at Friday’s sentencing of Isiah Graham. Prosecutor Melinda McGunnigle said Givens was shot point-blank in the back of the head.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports (https://bit.ly/1TUSJeO ) the sentence includes 15 years for illegal gun possession.

Givens’ mother was in the packed courtroom, called Graham an “animal” and said repeatedly he deserved to die.

About eight extra court security personnel were present for sentencing and families were separated when they exited the courtroom.

Graham, who was convicted in mid-October, continued to maintain his innocence.
