NORWICH, N.Y. (AP) - State police say two people have died and five others are hospitalized after a driver tried to pass a tractor-trailer and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

The crash happened around 7:15 Thursday morning on Route 8 in the Chenango County town of Norwich. Troopers say 43-year-old Yae Yar of Utica was driving a 2009 Honda CRV northbound when he tried to pass a tractor-trailer. The Honda collided with a southbound Subaru Outback driven by 27-year-old Joanna Stanimer of West Edmeston.

Police say Yar died of internal injuries. His front seat passenger, 36-year-old Me Me, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Stanimer was flown to Wilson Hospital and remains in critical condition with internal injuries.

Three adults and a 5-year-old child from Yar’s vehicle were also hospitalized.
