TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Pierce County prosecutors say a jury has convicted a DuPont man of second-degree murder for beating his 2-month-old daughter to death.

Prosecutors said in a news release that a jury convicted 32-year-old Dwayne Patrick Cowart Thursday for the death at his home.

In March 2014, prosecutors say the baby’s mother went to work and left the infant with Cowart. He reportedly called the mother later that day and said the girl was not breathing and that he had called 911.

First responders took the infant to the hospital where she died three weeks later.

Doctors say she suffered skull, rib, arm and leg fractures.

Cowart told detectives he became irritated while caring for his daughter, but that he didn’t mean to hurt her.

His sentencing is set for early February.
