ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Montgomery County Fire Rescue says Santa Claus will have to use a seatbelt while riding on top of a fire engine on the yearly Santa Run event.

Spokesman Pete Piringer tells WJLA-TV (https://bit.ly/1RsFcNN ) Santa will be required to use a safety harness or seat belt as he visits different neighborhoods each night.

Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein had originally suspended the neighborhood rides after concerns about Santa losing his balance while sitting on the moving vehicle.

The fire department struck a deal at the last minute, however, and the chief’s new set of rules will mandate Santa to ride the engine with more precaution.

The decades-old Santa Run will continue until Christmas Eve. Visits are usually between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
