JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi State Penitentiary is on lockdown after officials say an inmate was fatally stabbed by a fellow prisoner.

The Parchman facility issued a statement saying 43-year-old Carlos Jack was pronounced dead at the prison hospital after the Friday morning assault. Officials say 35-year-old Myran Shanks is suspected of using a homemade shank in the stabbing.

Officials say an investigation is ongoing and no other inmates were involved.

The prison announced it canceled visitation for the weekend and suspended inmates’ commissary privileges until further notice.

Jack was convicted in 2002 of armed robbery in Lowndes County and was serving a 25-year sentence. The prison says Shanks has been incarcerated since 1998, serving 30 years for burglary, aggravated assault and grand larceny in Tallahatchie County and armed robbery in Panola County.
