NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - A group looking to revitalize downtown Natchez is seeking funds and volunteers to spearhead the efforts.

The Natchez Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1QRgRQq ) Friends of Our Riverfront Natchez launched a public fundraising campaign Thursday.

The group wants to establish two major attraction zones, which include the bluff area on Canal and Broadway streets and the traditionally black business district surrounding Martin Luther King Jr. street.

FOR Natchez Chairwoman Chesney Doyle says the project aims to both revitalize downtown’s economic center and to reconnect the two areas that were historically separated by Jim Crow and civil rights strife.

Doyle says the fundraising efforts were split into two phases - one private and one public.

The group is also looking for volunteer team captains responsible for engaging the community in the fundraising initiative.
