NORTHWOOD, Ohio (AP) - Police responding to a reported assault outside a northwest Ohio bar on Friday chased three armed people and later exchanged gunfire with at least two of them, killing a woman and leading to the arrests of two men, authorities said.

One of the men was treated for a leg wound after the shootout in Northwood, which involved officers from two municipalities, Oregon police Chief Michael Navarre said.

The woman was identified as 20-year-old Erica Michelle Lauro, of Pensacola, Florida, according to Northwood Police Chief Thomas Cairl. The men arrested were 26-year-old Kenneth Maldonado, also of Pensacola, and 30-year-old Jack Welninski, whose hometown was not clear.

Cairl said all three were believed to be armed.

The two men were being held on various charges. There were no records Friday of the men having attorneys who could comment on the charges.

Navarre said Oregon officers were investigating the reported assault around 1 a.m. when three suspects fled in a vehicle and his officers pursued them to adjacent Northwood.

A Northwood resident later called police to report noises that investigators believe resulted when one of the men tried to steal a license plate, he said.

Officers from both cities responded, and one of the suspects shot into a police cruiser, leading to an exchange of gunfire, Navarre said. A sawed-off shotgun was found at the scene, investigators said.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is taking the lead in the case.
