PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Police in Maine’s largest city say a woman suffered fatal injuries when she was struck by a car in downtown Portland.

Authorities say 82-year-old Lee Whittier of Falmouth was struck as she attempted to cross Middle Street, near the Portland Police Department, at about 5:20 p.m. Thursday. They say she was not in a crosswalk at the time.

She was taken to Maine Medical Center where she died of her injuries.

The driver, 36-year-old Tori Steward of Yarmouth, has not been charged. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call the traffic division at 207-874-8532.
