WILLET, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they’ve charged a hunter who shot another man hunting in the same woods earlier this month in central New York.

Fifty-three-year-old Michael Quail of Marathon was arrested Thursday and charged with reckless endangerment and assault.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says both men were hunting in the same area in Willet in Cortland County on Dec. 6 when Quail shot a 24-year-old man in the abdomen with a rifle. The victim was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he was treated and eventually released.

Police say they don’t believe Quail knew the victim was hunting in the area when he fired his rifle.

Quail was released on his own recognizance. It’s unclear if he has an attorney who could comment on the charges.
