PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The owners of the Portland Aquarium have announced that the facility will close next year.

KOIN-TV reports (https://goo.gl/vShfv0 ) that marketing director Susan Elcox said in a statement Thursday that the aquarium will close Feb. 15, and the building will be demolished in early 2016.

Elcox says the aquarium could move to another location in the future, but one has not yet been determined.

The aquarium’s director, Roger McBee, says most of the animals will be shipped to an aquarium in Austin, Texas. All the employees have been given the option to transfer there or one of the other facilities.

The decision to close down operations at the Portland Aquarium comes after co-owner Ammon Covino pleaded guilty to illegally harvesting fish for the Idaho Aquarium in Boise.
