COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina has 40 new Highway Patrol troopers.

Local media outlets report Gov. Nikki Haley was on hand on Thursday as the troopers graduated from training in Columbia.

The governor told the new troopers that wearing the uniform brings power but that they can’t simply demand respect, they must earn it.

After graduation, the new troopers must complete a minimum of 400 hours of field training.

South Carolina now has 772 Highway Patrol troopers.
