CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - A 20-year-old man is jailed on $500,000 bond after being accused of stabbing a 5-year-old boy in the stomach while the boy was under his care.

Twenty-year-old Andrew Plaster is charged with felony abuse or neglect of a child, first-degree assault and armed criminal action.

St. Louis County police say Plaster was watching the boy on Thursday when the stabbing happened. Investigators say Plaster initially reported he wasn’t sure what happened, then said the boy stabbed himself. Authorities say Plaster later said he accidentally stabbed the boy when the two turned toward each other.

Online court records don’t show whether Plaster has an attorney who can speak on his behalf.
