YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has died after a driver fleeing a traffic stop in Nevada crashed into a canal.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Patricia Brandy Martinez of Fernley was a passenger in the car, which refused to stop for a deputy early Thursday morning.

Police say car crashed into a water-filled irrigation canal after a high-speed chase.

According to the statement, two deputies went into the canal and removed the driver and one passenger. But they couldn’t save Martinez, who was pronounced dead at the scene after rescue crews were able to extract her.

Deputies were treated at the scene for cold-related injuries.

The car’s occupants were treated at the Renown Medical Center and released.

The Reno Police Department arrested one of the occupants on unrelated warrants.
