MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) - Experts say holiday lasers designed to light up homes could be dangerous for planes.

Florida Today (https://on.flatoday.com/1lSw9sR ) reports that the popular laser lights can shine miles away when not properly positioned. They can light up the cockpit of an aircraft or even hit a pilot’s eye.

Scott Winter, an assistant professor of aeronautical science at Florida Institute of Technology, said it is important to make sure the lights are shining entirely on a house, wall, garage door or other surface.

Winter says people often do not realize the lights are a hazard.

The laser decorations are an easy and popular alternative to strands of traditional Christmas lights.
