HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - One of the front-runners in the U.S. House district vacated by former House Speaker John Boehner (BAY’-nur) has dropped out of the race.

Butler County Auditor Roger Reynolds says he’s now backing Ohio state Rep. Tim Derickson in the primary election to replace Boehner.

The announcement from Reynolds on Friday comes just weeks after he received a majority of the backing from the Butler County Republican Party’s endorsement vote.

There are more than a half dozen Republicans in the running for the March 15 nomination in the 8th U.S. House District, which spans six counties across western Ohio. The special general election vote will be June 7.

Boehner was first elected from Butler County to the heavily Republican seat in 1990 after a primary that ousted a scandal-marred incumbent.
