DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - A man who was fatally shot by a guard at a suburban Detroit courthouse was arrested in November for possessing a drug without a prescription.

The Detroit Free Press (https://on.freep.com/1UO8W6J ) says Mark Henning was scheduled to appear in Dearborn Heights court on Monday. He was killed Thursday at the city’s Justice Center. Police say he was carrying a large knife and tried to bypass security.

The Justice Center houses the court and police department.

The Free Press says Henning was arrested on Nov. 28 when his van hit a parked car. He was accused of possessing a sedative without a prescription.

Witnesses say Henning pulled a knife and charged a security guard before he was shot Thursday. The guard is a former Dearborn Heights police officer.
