PEARL RIVER, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York priest has been suspended over an allegation that he sexually abused a minor more than three decades ago.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1OCy2QY ) that Cardinal Timothy Dolan wrote to parishioners at St. Margaret of Antioch Parish in Pearl River on Wednesday informing them of the allegation against Monsignor John O’Keefe.

Dolan wrote that O’Keefe was accused of abusing a minor on two occasions in the early 1980s.

O’Keefe has denied the allegations.

New York Archdiocese spokesman Joseph Zwilling says the accuser alleges that the acts of abuse occurred in New York and Virginia.

Zwilling says O’Keefe has not been charged with any crimes since both incidents are beyond the statute of limitations.

Dolan said O’Keefe is in a “supervised setting” recovering from unrelated health issues.
