DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A southern Iowa woman is among 95 federal prisoners whose sentences for drug and gun crimes were shortened by President Barack Obama.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1Yscko2 ) that Obama on Friday commuted the sentence of Gloria Louise James, formerly of Fort Madison.

James will finish her prison sentence in April, more than seven months ahead of her original release date of Nov. 3, 2016. She was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison in 2004 after she was convicted of conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine.

James is currently an inmate at the federal correctional institution in Greenville, Ill.

Obama’s clemency orders are part of an effort to free prisoners who were sentenced under mandatory minimum guidelines that many advocates now argue were too harsh for nonviolent drug offenses.
