LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man is facing assault and drug charges after allegedly trying to reach for a police officer’s gun during a traffic stop. Three of his acquaintances also were arrested on drug charges.

Nassau County Police say Charles Rodriguez of Oceanside was a passenger in a vehicle stopped on Friday night. Police say they found a knife in Rodriguez’s front pocket and while being arrested he allegedly reached for an officer’s service weapon. He also allegedly grabbed at another officer’s baton.

The driver of the vehicle and two other passengers were subsequently arrested on drug charges. Police say they found marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and other items.

The four were to be arraigned on Sunday. Their attorneys’ names were not immediately known.

Four police officers were treated for minor injuries.
