DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a Columbus man hanged himself in jail after he was arrested on domestic violence charges.

The Columbus Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/1LNeVBK ) 38-year-old Dion Broersma was found dead by a corrections officer inside a single-person cell at the Delaware County jail around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Columbus man was arrested Thursday morning after authorities say he slammed a door repeatedly on the arm or hand of his girlfriend at a Lewis Center home. He was taken into custody and charged with felony domestic violence and assault.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tracy Whited says he likely was in a cell alone because the jail’s inmate count was low and they had the space. She says he wasn’t on suicide watch.
