WELLMAN, Iowa (AP) - Thousands of pigs have died in a fire at a hog confinement in southeast Iowa’s Washington County.

Brenneman Pork controller Adam Hocker told Cedar Rapids television station KCRG (https://bit.ly/1QefomK ) that the fire broke out around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday at the operation near Wellman. Hocker says no workers were inside the building at the time.

Hocker says an estimated 4,000 pigs were killed. The damaged building is considered a total loss.
