OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) - A 33-year-old central New York man charged with killing a vacationing 17-year-old girl at a Lake Ontario beach last summer has taken the stand in his own defense.

Steven Szatanek (zuh-TAN’-ehk) of Baldwinsville testified for nearly five hours Tuesday in an Oswego County court where’s on trial for second-degree murder in the slaying of Anna Rose Shove last Aug. 10.

The teen from the Rochester area was vacationing with her family at a recreational vehicle park when her body was found floating off a beach on the lake’s eastern end.

Szatanek testified that he met the girl earlier that day and smoked marijuana with her, but didn’t kill her.

He also testified he didn’t tell police about emptying her purse after looking for her later and filling it with rocks to sink it in waist-deep water.
