SAUK PRAIRIE, Wis. (AP) - A longtime officer with the Sauk Prairie Police Department has been arrested and accused of illegally obtaining a prescription drug and taking those narcotics while on duty.

Chief Jerry Strunz said Wednesday that police are recommending charges of misconduct in public office, possession of a narcotic drug and illegally obtaining a prescription drug against the officer who has been with the department 17 years. The officer has not been formally charged.

Strunz says the officer was arrested after department officials asked the state agents to investigate. The chief says the drugs involved are opiates and that it doesn’t appear they came from the department’s evidence collection.

The officer is on paid administrative leave.
