DENVER (AP) - Authorities say a police officer was injured and a suspect was killed during a shootout in Denver.

FBI spokeswoman Deborah Sherman tells The Denver Post the shooting happened while an agency task force was serving an arrest warrant in the Sloan’s Lake area Wednesday afternoon. The officer, whose name was not released, was shot in the leg and is in serious but stable condition.

The FBI had asked a Denver police SWAT team to assist.

Matt Murray, deputy chief of administration for the police department, says the officer is expected to survive but “this is a terrible situation to go through. Very emotional and very difficult.”

Denver Police spokesman Eranda Piyasena says the suspect fled in a car when officers closed in, but crashed and became stuck. It was there that shots were fired.
