CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - The latest on an alert issued for the University of North Carolina campus in Chapel Hill. All times local.

11:55 a.m.

The police chief at the University of North Carolina says that with mass shootings across the United States, he’s glad someone reported seeing a possible gunman on campus even though no threat was found.

Chief Jeff McCracken said Wednesday’s false alarm was understandable, and he wants people to continue reporting what they see.

An anonymous call about a man carrying a rifle near the school’s Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps building sparked a campus-wide alert urging students and employees to lock themselves indoors. McCracken says investigators found no threats.

The all-clear was issued less than an hour after the alert, with instructions for students and others to resume normal activities.

The school is the flagship of UNC’s 16 colleges and one residential high school.
