TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Some inmates in Tucson convicted of misdemeanor charges may end up serving their sentences in Nogales.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1lXi3pK ) that Tucson and Santa Cruz County are working on an agreement to send inmates with sentences of 10 days or more to Nogales, where the cost of housing inmates is less than at the Pima County jail.

Deputy City Manager Martha Durkin says Pima County charges Tucson $279 for booking and $85 for each additional day an inmate from Tucson City Court is in jail.

Under the proposed agreement, Santa Cruz County would not charge a booking fee for Tucson inmates and the daily fee would be $65.

Durkin says the Pima County jail fees have increased dramatically since 2007, when the per diem was $57 with a $166 booking fee.
