SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Three western New York colleges are splitting more than $40,000 in a grant to conduct projects aimed at protecting the ecosystem of the Great Lakes.

The Syracuse-based Great Lakes Research Consortium says the funds are going to Buffalo State College, the University at Buffalo, and Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.

The money is being used for projects related to early detection of invasive species and lake-effect storm impact and projection.

The Great Lakes Research Consortium is comprised of 18 colleges and universities in New York state, along with nine affiliate campuses in Ontario, Canada. The schools collaborate on research and education on the Great Lakes.

UB and Hobart and William Smith are each getting $14,000, while Buffalo State is receiving $12,464.
