HOUSTON (AP) - A fire at a Houston apartment complex was made worse when residents who lost their homes say thieves later stole Christmas presents that had managed to survive the blaze.

KTRK-TV reports (https://abc13.co/1OhdCfR ) that residents from the four burned or damaged apartments had to leave their homes Saturday to seek warm shelter following the fire the night before.

Residents say that thieves later rummaged through their apartments and that the few items, mainly wrapped Christmas presents, that survived the fire were stolen.

Complex resident Daniella Escalante says the thieves were “people without a heart” and “they took things I was going to give as a gift.”

The American Red Cross is assisting the families affected by the fire.

Authorities believe the fire started in one of the apartment’s bedrooms.
