TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The city of Tacoma is seeking public comment on a plan for a plant to turn natural gas into methanol for export to China.

The News Tribune reports (https://is.gd/PQLLAv ) two public meetings will be held early next year, on Jan. 21 and Feb. 16.

The city of Tacoma will also accept written comments through Feb. 17.

The city is asking for comments on what the public thinks should be the scope of the project’s environmental review.

Then a consultant will draft an environmental impact statement that will be open for public review and comment as early as next summer.

The plant is expected to use a lot of water and power.

Northwest Innovation hopes to create up to 20,000 metric tons of methanol per day and employ 1,000 people.

The Tacoma project is one of three the company is proposing in the Pacific Northwest.
