NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Clarksville attorney will receive an award from the Tennessee Bar Association for her efforts in providing free legal advice to low-income Tennesseans.

The bar association said Elizabeth “Libby” Sykes will receive the organization’s Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year Award at a ceremony on Jan. 23 in Nashville.

Sykes has provided pro bono assistance through the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services’ legal help line, HELP4TN.

The help line program manager, Tim Hughes, nominated Sykes and said she knows people whose legal problems aren’t addressed could be left in an even worse financial condition.

The award is named for Nashville attorney Harris A. Gilbert, who served as president of the bar association from 1994 to 1995 and who was dedicated to providing legal services to the poor.
