NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Police say seven people are now displaced after a weekend fire tore through a multifamily home in New Haven and decimated the property.

The fire broke out at the three-story home on Redfield Street around 8 a.m. Sunday. The flames forced two residents to a second floor balcony, where Officer Carlos Ortiz and a neighbor were able to rescue them with a ladder.

The fire was extinguished around 11 a.m.

Officer David Hartman says five of the home’s seven residents were treated for smoke inhalation at Yale-New Haven Hospital. One woman is also being treated for minor burns.

Hartman says the blaze was significant and the home is “beyond repair.” He expects it will likely be razed.

Assistant Fire Chief Matthew Marcarelli says it’s too soon to determine a cause.
