PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a man is accused of fatally stabbing his estranged wife at a south Phoenix apartment complex.

Phoenix police say 36-year-old Hojat Fahandej Saadi was arrested Sunday on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Bond was set at $1 million at Saadi’s initial court appearance Monday. He doesn’t have a lawyer yet.

According to the court records, 30-year-old Laleh Fahandej Saadi was attacked with a “survival style” ax.

Her screams awoke several residents around 3 a.m. Sunday at the Arbor Village Apartments.

Police say the woman banged on a neighbor’s door and was found bleeding and severely injured.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Court records show the couple had been married for 13 years but were estranged and Hojat lived separately from Laleh in an apartment in north Phoenix.
