OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld the life prison sentence of an inmate who was convicted of first-degree murder in the beating and stabbing death of a fellow inmate at the Lawton Correctional Facility.

The court handed down the decision Monday to 25-year-old Ryan Garcia, who was convicted by a jury in Comanche County of the June 2012 death of inmate Sonny Limpy. Garcia was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Surveillance video showed Garcia was part of a group of inmates who attacked Limpy at the facility in Lawton. Other inmates testified that Limpy was targeted because he refused to join an effort to unify all Hispanic gangs in the facility.

Garcia’s defense attorney, Reginald C. Armor, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

This story has been corrected to show that the defendant is 25, not 23.
