WALLINGFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police say a 26-year-old man was killed over the weekend after his car swerved off the road on Interstate 91 and struck a tree in southern Connecticut.

It happened around 1:10 p.m. Sunday near Exit 15 in Wallingford.

State police say Walter Sarmiento-Bustamante was traveling northbound on I-91 when his car drifted and struck a wire rope guard rail on the left shoulder. Sarmiento-Bustamante’s Toyota careened across three lanes before striking a tree along the right shoulder area.

Sarmiento-Bustamante was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was wearing his seatbelt. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene but later canceled.
