SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old newly-elected Hudson Valley fire captain has died after he went into distress while battling a house fire over the weekend.

Officials with the Mount Marion Fire Department say volunteer firefighter Jack Rose was fighting a chimney fire in Saugerties (SAW’-ger-teez) Saturday night when he became separated from his team. Fire officials say he was quickly located and became unresponsive outside.

Authorities say the Saugerties resident was taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston, where he later died.

Fire Chief Dave Ayers says the department is devastated over the loss of Rose, who was a three-year veteran of the department. Rose was also an emergency medical technician.

The cause of his death is under investigation.
