SUMMIT, Miss. (AP) - Summit Fire Chief Stan McMorris says fire has destroyed an area landmark: the Dixie Springs Cafe.

He tells The Clarion-Ledger (https://on.thec-l.com/22ldS8h ) that two-story building was entirely ablaze when fire trucks arrived early Monday.

Owners Joe and Kristine Kimmel were in New Orleans when they learned about the fire. Kristine Kimmel says neighbors heard explosions and then sirens about 4 a.m.

She says she’d worked at the restaurant for 26 years. She started as a waitress and her husband as a bartender. They bought the restaurant in 2000.

The cafe has served the Pike and Lincoln county communities for more than 75 years. It was known for recipes handed down from its opening years, and its lakefront location made it a favorite spot for banquets, receptions, and prom night reservations.
