GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - A California man is dead and another was seriously injured after the vehicle they were riding in crashed on a New Mexico interstate.

New Mexico State Police say the accident happened shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 40 just west of Gallup.

Twenty-five-year-old Joshi Sangam, of Hesperia, was traveling westbound when his car drifted off the right side of the roadway for an unknown reason.

Authorities say the vehicle went through a guardrail before hitting a dirt embankment.

They say a passenger, 26-year-old Baljinder Singh of Van Nuys, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sangam was also injured and taken to a hospital.

His condition was not immediately known Wednesday morning.

The crash remains under investigation.
