MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) - A former Iowa county sheriff has been charged in connection to a state investigation that accused him of mismanaging money, including thousands of dollars for gasoline.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1OLTNOu ) former Poweshiek County Sheriff Tom Sheets was arrested Dec. 11 on a charge of second-degree theft.

Court records related to the case do not list an attorney for Sheets. An arraignment is scheduled on Jan. 11.

The arrest is in connection to a state auditor report in 2013 that investigated operations at the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office between January 2010 and the end of March 2013.

The report said the county lost about $312,000 during that time. Sheets was accused of improper disbursements, including repeated use of a county gas card for personal use.
