RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The godchildren of a World War II soldier from Rutland are going to be accepting the Purple Heart that was awarded to him for his wartime service but somehow ended up with a Vermont auction company.

The Purple Heart issued to Pvt. Robert Kenney will be turned over to his godchildren in a ceremony Wednesday at the Rutland Historical Society by the Vermont-based organization Purple Hearts Reunited.

Kenney was born in Rutland in 1915. He joined the Army in 1944 and served in the 80th Infantry Division, which served in Europe. Kenney survived the war and returned to Rutland where he died in 1997.

The medal will be turned over to the historical society, which will put the medal on permanent display.
