FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) - A trailer filled with construction supplies burst into flames in downtown Fort Dodge, causing smoke to fill the air around the city’s municipal building.

The Fort Dodge Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/1mgxaum ) the fire was reported just before noon Tuesday in a 16-foot-long trailer outside the municipal building. The trailer contained tools and supplies for workers rebuilding the structure’s front steps.

Fire Department Capt. Steve Teske says workers smelled something burning and found the fire in the trailer, but it spread too quickly for them to extinguish. The fire has been ruled an accident.

Damage to the trailer and its contents was estimated at $40,000 to $50,000.
